In Baku, court leaves opposition activist in custody

Today, in Baku, the court has dismissed the appeal filed against the arrest of activist Sakhladar Iskenderli, detained after a picket, and left him in custody, the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) reports.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 21, in Baku, the courts arrested activists Sakhladar Iskenderli and Vilayat Mamedov. Activists are being prosecuted for political reasons, members of the PFPA believe.

"On August 18, Sakhladar Iskenderli raised posters with the slogans about the resignation of the President of Azerbaijan and the release of political prisoners ... On August 20, the activist was detained and sentenced to two months of arrest," reported Gezyal Bairamly, the deputy chair of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA).

According to her, the police activist was forced to remove the video.

"According to the court's version, law enforcers found that Sakhladar Iskenderli had drugs, and he failed to obey the police," said Asabali Mustafaev, an advocate of the activist.
