Co-Chairs of Geneva debates call to open Georgian-South-Ossetian border

The closure of checkpoints on the Georgian-South-Ossetian border creates difficulties for the local population and increases tension, the co-chairs of the Geneva international debates have stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that South Ossetia closed the border with Georgia for an indefinite period, explaining this step by the escalation of tension on the part of Tbilisi in connection with the erection of block-posts near the border. On September 13, Georgian officials demanded from South Ossetia to open the border for travel of pre-border residents. In its turn, South Ossetia stated that it was ready to do it if Georgia made concessions.

The co-chairs of the Geneva international debates have persistently urged to refrain from taking steps with negative humanitarian consequences.

"It is imperative not to expose people affected by the conflict to additional suffering, and to fully respect human rights, including the freedom of travel," says the website of the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe).
