Case of marriage with minor in KBR gets to court

A resident of the Cherek District is accused of having entered into sexual intercourse with a minor. According to investigators, the Imam of the mosque contributed to the crime, since the couple managed to make a religious marriage.

According to investigators, the man, born in 1992, entered into an intimate relationship with a girl born in 2004 upon her consent, not knowing that she had not reached the age of sixteen. The couple did not receive a special permit for reducing the marriage age and did not register a civil marriage, the Investigating Department (ID) for the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) has reported.

"The Imam of the mosque, knowing that the girl had not reached the marriageable age, issued a certificate of a religious marriage," the ID has reported.

In 2011, the ID for the KBR of the ICRF demanded from the Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SAM) not to admit marriages with minors. The ID recalled that a Muslim marriage does not contradict the legislation of the Russian Federation only if both spouses have reached 16 years of age.
