AI associates Dagestani journalist Gadjiev's case with authorities' attack on freedom of speech

The ongoing criminal prosecution of Dagestani journalist Abdulmumin Gadjiev is part of a consolidated campaign by the authorities to suppress the newspaper "Chernovik" (Draft), the "Amnesty International" (AI) declares. The human rights organization considers the charges brought against Abdulmumin Gadjiev as far-fetched.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 18, Abdulmumin Gadjiev, an editor of the religion department of the Dagestani website "Chernovik", was arrested in a case on financing of terrorism. The journalist pleads not guilty.

The AI expressed its deep concern over the ongoing harassment of the independent weekly newspaper "Chernovik". "The ongoing harassment of the independent newspaper 'Chernovik' is the latest attack on media freedom and the right to freedom of expression in Russia," the AI declares on its website.

Natalia Prilutskaya, an AI's specialist for Russia, claimed "intolerance of the Russian authorities to freedom of speech."

It should be noted that the Dagestani Ministry of Justice (MoJ) refuses to sanction mass actions in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev. Activists filed appeals against the MoJ's refusals to the Constitutional Court of Dagestan.
