Regina Gagieva's murder reveals problem of domestic violence in North Ossetia

Participants in a roundtable in Vladikavkaz have discussed the problem of domestic violence in the republic, recalling the murder of Regina Gagieva. According to their stories, the police often neglects victims' complaints; and there is no one to help them among relatives.

Fatima Andieva, one of the organizers of the roundtable, has noted that the topic of domestic violence is becoming increasingly relevant and, amid the tragedy with Regina Gagieva, has caused a wide public outcry.

Within two months, they received and processed about 30 complaints about domestic violence, said Agunda Bekoeva, the head of the "Khotæ" public movement against domestic violence. According to her story, this is quite a lot for such a small republic.

"All the cases are egregious and scary ... Children almost always suffer," Ms Bekoeva has added.

"It turned out that in almost all the cases, when women turned to police stations, they were driven out of there under various pretexts ... And these are not just one or two cases of negligence and inattention on the part of law enforcers," Ms Bekoeva has stated.

She has noted that North Ossetia has no shelter for victims of domestic violence.
