Mikhail Saakashvili suspected of attempt to overthrow power in Georgia

The Georgian police suspected Mikhail Saakashvili of involvement in an attempt to overthrow the government on the basis of his statement that it was possible to achieve a "regime fall" in the summer of 2019.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in Tbilisi, protests began after on June 20, Sergey Gavrilov, Russian State Duma member, took the chair of the speaker of the Georgian parliament at a meeting of the parliamentary Orthodox assembly. The above fact caused dissatisfaction of some MPs, who were supported by the opposition.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Georgia is engaged in examining the statement voiced by former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili in connection with the protest rally in Tbilisi on June 20-21, 2019. Mikhail Saakashvili voiced the disputable statement in his interview to the "Mtavari Arkhi" TV Company on January 12, the "Sputnik-Georgia" reports on January 13.

In particular, Mikhail Saakashvili said that "Bidzina Ivanishvili was on the verge." According to the former Georgian President, "a little bit more of protests would have been enough, and the regime would have fallen," but "the moment was missed."

The Georgian MIA suggests that Mikhail Saakashvili was involved in the events of June 2019. "The statement is a sufficient basis for the suggestion that on June 20, 2019, Mikhail Saakashvili, with his direct participation and leadership, made a clear attempt to overthrow state power by force," stated the Georgian MIA as quoted by the "News-Georgia".

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
