Resident of Dagestan tells about the fate of his son wounded by law enforcers

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has awarded 80,000 euros to Gasan Baisultanov, a resident of Dagestan, whose wife was shot dead during a special operation in 2006. Gasan himself was seriously wounded and lost his ability to move; his father intends to seek compensation to his son for his disability, and punishment of law enforcers.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 3, 2006, during a special operation in the city of Khasavyurt, policemen surrounded Gasan Baisultanov's house and opened fire. Gasan was seriously wounded, and his wife Sapiyat Magomedova was mortally wounded. The inquiry into law enforcers' criminal actions was interrupted for at least 21 times.

Having examined Gasan Baisultanov's complaint, the ECtHR has awarded him 80,000 euros as compensation of moral harm and 2000 euros more to cover the legal costs, the TASS reported on February 4.

The applicant, Mamatkhan Baisultanov, Gasan's father, has told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that he intends to continue seeking criminal proceedings against the law enforcers, who have wounded his son and shot dead his daughter-in-law.

He said that after his wound received in 2006, Gasan Baisultanov lost his ability to work. "My son worked as an installer at a hydroelectric power plant (HPP), but he can't work for 14 years already. The bullet went through two centimetres from his heart. Gasan hasn't yet recovered and can't get out of bed," said the father, adding that he also intends to sue Russian authorities for compensation for the fact that his son became disabled for life.
