Journalists of Adjara TV treat dismissal of their colleagues as unfair
An action against the actions of the new leadership of the Adjara TV was held in Batumi. Protesters claimed the unfair dismissal of the TV channel's employees, in particular, of Maya Merkviladze, the deputy director of the news service.
On February 2, Natiya Zoidze, the deputy director of the Adjara TV, announced her resignation after complaints about attempts by Giorgi Kokhreidze, the new director, to change the editorial policy.
On December 5, 2019, journalists of the Adjara TV claimed that the new director demands from them to take a new approach to inviting guests on the air and plans to terminate contracts with unwanted employees.
On February 24, media professionals and NGO activists gathered for a solidarity rally with journalists of the Adjara TV, the "Rustavi-2" TV Company reports.
The journalists of the news service of the Adjara TV have stated that the new leadership is undermining the informational independence of the Adjara Public Broadcaster, while journalists have to work under intense psychological pressure.
Giorgi Mgeladze, the executive director of the NGO "Charter of Journalistic Ethics", speaking on air of the "Rustavi-2", has treated the dismissal of Maya Merkviladze as a "censorship attempt."
