Russia pays compensation to seven Georgian citizens for deportation

Seven Georgian citizens deported from Russia in 2006 received compensation awarded to them by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in 2014, the Strasbourg Court found that the Russian authorities violated the rights of Georgian citizens deported in 2006. In January 2019, the ECtHR awarded 10,000-15,000 euros of compensation to each of 1500 Georgian citizens who filed complaints. The total amount of compensation amounted to 10 million euros. Furthermore, the Strasbourg Court considered individual claims of the deportees and awarded them compensation in the amounts of 2,000-15,000 euros. Russia failed to pay compensation within the due term, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili claimed at a session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in January.

Seven out of eight Georgian citizens, whose interests were represented by the NGO "Georgian Young Lawyers' Association" (GYLA), received compensation from Russia, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports today with reference to the GYLA's announcement. The payment of compensation to one more resident of Georgia is under consideration now, the GYLA reports. The NGO also noted that at a meeting held on March 3-5, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe harshly criticized Russia for failure to pay compensations.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
