Rights defenders point to risk of coronavirus infection for those arrested in Azerbaijan
Arrests of quarantine violators in Azerbaijan increase the risk of coronavirus spread in jails; therefore, convicts for minor crimes should be released, human rights defenders have stated.
The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed at the press service of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) that the inmates are under daily medical control; their temperature is measured; and when it is elevated, they are isolated from other inmates.
Elshan Gasanov, the head of the Centre for Monitoring Political Prisoners, believes that deprivation of liberty for violating the quarantine regime is incorrect. He has noted that during the quarantine period, visiting and delivering foodstuff parcels to inmates are prohibited; and this exacerbates their situation.
Djavad Djavadov, an advocate of Babek Gasanov, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), said that two weeks ago his client fell ill in the colony.
