Defence demands to investigate torture of convict from Chechnya

Advocates of Khumaid Khaidaev, a native of Chechnya, have demanded from the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) and the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) to check the information that Khumaid was brutally tortured after the inmates' riots in the Irkutsk Region. Khaidaev, convicted in 2008, was preparing for release from colony and could not be the organizer of the riots, his brother has suggested.

According to the Irkutsk region branch of the FSIN (Russian Federal Penitentiary Service), on April 9, a group of convicts attacked a colony officer; and on the following day the colony was set on fire.

The defence fears that Khaidaev's further stay in that Irkutsk colony threatens his life, as there is a risk that he "may be exposed to unlawful influence."

Khusein Galaev, an advocate, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that Khaidaev looked severely beaten.

A few days after the riots in the colony, Khaidaev's advocates could not find out his whereabouts, said Oyub Titiev, an analyst of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial".

"According to advocates, they were shocked by the appearance of their client. His whole body and face was in abrasions and bruises; his fingers and toes were broken. He spoke and breathed with difficulty ... It is clear that Khaidaev was beaten up for a long time and brutally," Mr Titiev has pointed out.

Khumaid's brother said that he was 26 years old when he was arrested in 2006. According to the brother, Khumaid's fellow villager, detained on suspicion of links with militants, testified against him. He described his elder brother as "a strong and hard man."
