Prosecutor's Office succeeds in seeking harsher sentence for Ingush activist

The Prosecutor's Office claimed that Bagaudin Myakiev took part in a rally in Magas out of political reasons and convinced the court to sentence the activist to imprisonment not in a settlement penal colony, but in a common-security penal colony. Given the period of the defendant's stay in a SIZO (pre-trial prison), the sentence of the Ingush activist increased by four months, an advocate calculated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 20, Bagaudin Myakiev, a 54-year-old member of the Ingush Council of Teips (family clans), was sentenced to one year and ten months of imprisonment. The court found that at the rally, Bagaudin Myakiev was throwing chairs at fighters of the National Guard of Russia. Meanwhile, the public prosecutor did not succeed in the attempts to politicize the Ingush activist's actions, noted advocate Magomet Aushev. On April 8, the court changed the pre-trial restriction measure for Bagaudin Myakiev by releasing him from custody on recognizance not to leave.

The activist admitted that during the rally, he threw chairs in the direction of the law enforcers, but said that he did not aim at the fighters of the National Guard of Russia.

The defence does not agree with the court's decision, the advocate emphasizes.

Bagaudin Myakiev dissociated himself from the motive of political hostility. The Ingush activist expresses his concern that he can face the risk of catching a coronavirus infection when placed to the SIZO during the epidemic.

Let us remind you that in July 2019, the defence of Bagaudin Myakiev reported about his beating in the Nalchik SIZO. After the beating, Bagaudin Myakiev went on hunger strike, which was supported by other detainees. The protesters stopped the hunger strike after a meeting with prosecutors. The administration of the SIZO explained injuries on the Bagaudin Myakiev's body by an accident.
