Story of girl's circumcision in Ingushetia arouses anger of Russian feminists

Russian authorities should respond to the continued practice of female circumcisions in Northern Caucasus, subscribers of feminist publics in social networks believe.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that a woman from Chechnya achieved an opening of a criminal case in Ingushetia about the intentional infliction of harm to the health of her nine-year-old daughter. The woman claims that her ex-husband, without her knowledge, took the girl to the clinic, where she was circumcised. Experts have recognized the ritual nature of the surgery.

The story about the female circumcision in Ingushetia has triggered angry comments in the social networks posted by supporters of the feminist movement. Many of them have noted that such crippling surgeries should be prohibited by the authorities.

Facebook users have also commented on the incident in Ingushetia. "I have a feeling that our country is being stupidly remade to suit obscurantists," the user Milaya Milka has written.

"This is scary. In Sudan and Gambia, they punish for this, but not in the Russian Federation," Alyona Sozontova has stated.
