Azerbaijani citizens suspend their hunger strike in camp on border of Dagestan

Today, 130 Azerbaijani citizens, who were staying in Dagestan and expecting a permission to return to their homeland, have crossed the border. Their fellow countrymen, who still stay in a tent camp near the village of Kullar, have stopped the mass hunger strike.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 3, Azerbaijani citizens staying in the tent camp in Dagestan declared a hunger strike with the demand to advance their return home. As of June 8, about 150 people took part in the hunger strike.

"This morning, 130 people have been sent to Azerbaijan. They are mainly women with children and sick and elderly people. There are also some young people among them," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Asim Tagiev, a resident of the tent camp near the village of Kullar.

Asim Tagiev has noted that today, the mass hunger strike in the Kullar village, which was declared six days ago, has been suspended. "Today, starting from the very morning, the place is already empty. Many people continued the hunger strike for four-five days, and they had health problems. Yesterday (on June 8), at the gathering, some activists suggested stopping the protest action, because the hunger strike damaged the people's immunity. Moreover, accumulation of people in one place violates social distancing and increases the risk of spreading the virus," Asim Tagiev said.
