Tent camp tenants in Dagestan lose hope for returning to Azerbaijan

After the riots in the tent camp in Dagestan, about 20 Azerbaijani citizens have decided not to wait for departure home, but returned to the regions of Russia where they had worked. The situation in the camp has stabilized, but there is still no certainty about their return to homeland, the Azerbaijanis remaining in the temporary accommodation centre (TAC) said.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that now over 400 Azerbaijanis stay in the TAC set up near the village of Kullar. They sleep in tents accommodating 13 people each or more; many have been waiting for departure home for one or two months.

The Azerbaijani citizens who failed to get home due to the closure of borders are waiting for the removal of quarantine measures in the pre-border districts of Dagestan.

The situation in the camp is calm, said Elshan Mukhtarov, a resident of Azerbaijan. "The police acted brutally; and as a result, those who didn't take part in the action suffered either. However, in order to avoid problems, the people who received traumas try to conceal it. All we want is to return to Azerbaijan, to our families," he said.

Women, knowing that they are let across the border out of turn, are constantly arriving at the camp, Mr Mukhtarov has noted.

The disorders involving Azerbaijanis that broke out in Dagestan are explained by the coronavirus restrictions, Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President, has stated. According to his story, the Kremlin expects that these difficulties will be resolved.
