In Baku, court extends arrest of oppositionist Tofig Yagublu
Opposition Azerbaijani politician Tofig Yagublu has been left under arrest for other two months. The defence treats the court's decision as unfounded.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Tofig Yagublu, a member of the "Musavat" Party and of the coordinating centre of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NSDS) of Azerbaijan, was detained on March 22. The activist was accused of committing a road traffic accident and assault on a married couple. The activist called himself a victim of provocation.
The "Human Rights Watch" (HRW) and the "Amnesty International" (AI) have called on the Azerbaijani authorities to release Tofig Yagublu. Human rights defenders recognized him as a political prisoner.
Nigyar Khazi, a daughter of Tofig Yagublu, said that her father had health problems. "The father suffers from asthma, and the hot weather worsens his health state ... He can hardly breathe in prison because of poor conditions of detention," the politician's daughter said.
