Social network users treat apologies of detained Chechens' fathers as humiliating

The public apologies of fathers of the Chechen residents detained for violating traffic rules have humiliated older men, Instagram users have noted.

Authors of many comments on the Instagram, whole not justifying the young people's actions, treat their fathers' apologies as excessive.

"I feel sorry for parents; they feel uncomfortable; the guys can be forgiven; we all did stupid things," the user mega8750111 wrote. "Why should we disgrace parents?" the user temneyechernogo has asked.

Akhmet Yarlykapov, a Caucasian researcher, has recalled that the Chechens' code of ethics "Kyonakhalla" has no provision on any parents' responsibility for their children's misconduct. "A Chechen is responsible for members of his kin (family clan). The blood feud originates from here ... But it looks anecdotal when a father takes responsibility for his son's violation of traffic rules and apologizes for it," Mr Yarlykapov has explained.

Alexei Malashenko, the research director at the "Civilizations' Dialogue" Institute, has added that according to Chechen customs, only until a certain age a father is responsible for his son. "If a young man is 18-19 years old, it's quite normal for the father to promise that he will control his son and try to prevent any relapse of the latter's offense," Mr Malashenko has stated.

Let us note here that public repentances of relatives has become commonplace for Chechnya. Thus, on July 9, a brother of Minkail Malizaev, a blogger living in Europe, recorded a video with an apology for the blogger's criticism of Chechen authorities.
