Gift to Madina Umaeva's husband indicates Kadyrov's tolerance to violence against women

The Chechen authorities have publicly demonstrated their approval of one of the parties to the conflict in Gudermes by donating a new house to the husband of Madina Umaeva, who died after complaining about domestic violence, said Ruslan Kutaev, the head of the Assembly of Caucasian Nations. The gift to the husband supports Ramzan Kadyrov's idea that a woman should endure beatings in marriage, said Svetlana Gannushkina, a human rights defender.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Madina Umaeva, a resident of Gudermes, whose death attracted public attention in Chechnya, had tried, for many times, according to her relatives, to leave her husband because of beatings and complained to her relatives about her mother-in-law. On July 18, the authorities of Chechnya presented the husband of the deceased woman with a new house, but the results of the forensic examination of Umaeva's exhumed body have not yet been announced.

On June 12, Madina, a 23-year-old mother of three children, died in a house of her husband and his parents. In contradiction to Islamic traditions, the woman was buried at night. After social networks disseminated reports that the young woman had fallen victim to domestic violence, her mother succeeded in seeking exhumation of her daughter's body and attended the procedure. Without waiting for the results of the forensic examination, the leader of Chechnya met the mother and the husband of the deceased woman, as well as her other relatives. The mother of the deceased young woman apologized for the statement about the violent death of her daughter.

The new house, presented to Madina Umaeva's husband shortly after the suspicious death of the young woman, is a clear gesture of public encouragement by Ramzan Kadyrov to one of the parties to the conflict, Ruslan Kutaev has stated. He admitted that he was surprised by such a significant encouragement of Umaeva's husband amid the suspicions of his wife's violent death.

The Kadyrov's gift is an attempt to justify the murder, Svetlana Gannushkina, the chair of the "Civil Assistance" Committee, believes. According to her version, with this gesture Kadyrov shows his attitude to the violence of men against women.

"He shows that he supports men's violence against women, the men's right to dispose of women, and to treat them like property. This gift is a continuation of his statements that a woman should cling to her husband, even if he beats her," she said ... Ms Gannushkina has added that such actions of the Chechen leadership "go beyond traditions and moral norms."
