In Beslan, people gather for memory watch despite quarantine

In Beslan, more than 1000 people took part in the mourning events in the first hours after they began. The number of participants in the traditional memory watch was not limited, despite the threat of the coronavirus infection.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that starting from September 1, in North Ossetia, schools are holding a three-day watch in memory of the victims killed in the terror act in the Beslan school No. 1 in 2004. A memorial service is planned in the school building, which has become a memorial, and the Beslan Palace of Culture will host the exhibition of photographs entitled "Remember in Order to Live".

On September 1, 2004, terrorists took 1128 hostages in a gym of the Beslan school No. 1. The special operation to release the hostages was finished on September 3, 2004. As a result of the terror act, 334 people were killed, including 186 children, and other 810 people were injured.

Today, the mourning events have been launched at the destroyed school building at 9:15 a.m. Moscow time. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of North Ossetia, more than 1000 people visited the school building during the first hours of the memory watch. People lay flowers, light candles at the photographs of the killed victims, bring toys and water, which the hostages were deprived of during three days, the TASS reports.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, everyone can attend the event, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has been told by Aneta Gadieva, the co-chair of the "Mothers of Beslan" Committee. "The number of participants in the event was not regulated, because no one could tell people not to attend the ceremony held in honour of the victims of the terror act," Aneta Gadieva said.
