Poll on domestic violence in North Ossetia reveals distrust of police
The "Khotae" (Sisters) Project has published data of an anonymous polling on domestic violence in North Ossetia. Almost 42% of respondents have experienced some type of domestic violence, mostly by a husband or wife.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the "Khotae" Project was launched in the fall of 2019 after the resonant murder of Regina Gagieva.
In September 2019, Regina Gagieva, a 22-year-old resident of Vladikavkaz, got stab wounds and died in a hospital a week later. According to investigators, the woman was murdered by her former husband who escaped from house arrest and attacked his former wife out of jealousy.
Earlier this year, organizers of the "Khotae" movement drafted and posted an anonymous polling on domestic violence on the "Survio" platform. It was intended for residents of North Ossetia; 650 people took part in it; 89% of them were women. The results of the polling were published on September 27, Elina Valieva, one of the initiators, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent on September 29.
"The figures speak for themselves – almost 42% of 650 respondents have experienced some type of domestic violence; 60% of those who faced it, called their husbands or wives to be their abuser. At the same time, almost 13% of respondents (49 of 386 respondents) received the traumas, the description of which can be found today in the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation," Ms Valieva has added.
The polling results allow making a preliminary conclusion that many respondents do not seek help at all (45%), and if they do, it is mainly to their family members, friends and acquaintances. Only 8% and 1% of the respondents expressed their confidence in law enforcement or social protection bodies," Elina Valieva has concluded.
