Putin admits need to finalize Nemtsov murder case

The customers of the murder of the politician, Boris Nemtsov, have been found, but the case should be "given another brush," Russian President, Vladimir Putin, believes.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in July, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) communicated the complaint lodged by Zhanna Nemtsova, a daughter of the assassinated politician, about the way her father's murder had been investigated in Russia. The ECtHR invited the parties – Zhanna Nemtsova and the Russian Government – to answer, in particular, about whether the investigation was efficient, and whether Zhanna's right to defence was observed. Five years after the murder, Vadim Prokhorov, the advocate of the Nemtsov family, stated that no investigation was actually being conducted. In November 2020, the authors of the joint journalistic investigation of Mediazona and the Scanner Project stated that investigators had ignored the links of those convicted of Boris Nemtsov's murder with the people close to Chechen leadership.

Russian politician Boris Nemtsov was killed in the centre of Moscow on February 27, 2015. Five natives of Chechnya and Ingushetia were sentenced in the case of his assassination.

In Nemtsov's murder case, "on the whole, everything is clear; the executors have been found, and the customers, too," the Kremlin website quotes Vladimir Putin's words from the transcript of the closed meeting with human rights activists, which took place on December 12. Nevertheless, the head of state noted that the case "needs to be finalized."

  • Analysts assess Dagestani head’s statement on appeals of SMO fighters

The appeals of the participants of the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine from Dagestan to republic’s authorities are caused by many local problems and remain one of the ways to attract officials’ attention. Despite the statement by the head of Dagestan, Sergey Melikov, that the combatants record their appeals as a result of "manipulations," he will have to respond to them, analysts believe.
