Georgian MIA postpones arrest of Nika Meliya after resignation of Prime Minister

After the resignation of Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakhariya, the execution of the court's decision about the arrest of oppositionist Nika Meliya has been postponed for some time, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Georgia reports. Supporters of Giorgi Gakhariya explained his resignation by disagreements and called his leaving unexpected.

Today, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakhariya has announced his resignation in connection with the non-execution of the court's decision about the detention of Nika Meliya, the leader of the opposition "United National Movement" Party.

After Giorgi Gakhariya has announced his resignation, the MIA of Georgia has temporarily postponed the execution of the court's decision to arrest Nika Meliya, the leader of the opposition "United National Movement" (UNM) Party, reports the Georgian MIA on its official website as translated from Georgian by a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The resignation of Giorgi Gakhariya from the post of the Prime Minister of Georgia came as a surprise to his supporters, says Irakli Kobakhidze, the chairman of the ruling "Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia" Party. "We had a discussion concerning the timing of the execution of the court's decision about the arrest of Nika Meliya. Giorgi Gakhariya voiced his position, which differed from the opinion of other team members. However, unfortunately, we did not hear from him any arguments that would strengthen his position," said Irakli Kobakhidze as quoted by the "Sputnik Georgia".

Irakli Kobakhidze has added that the ruling "Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia" Party will present a new candidate for the post of the government's chair on February 19.
