Saakashvili finds "Kosovo model" unacceptable for Georgia

President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili has stated today in Brussels that he rejects any parallels between settling the Kosovo status problem and the situation with South Ossetia и Abkhazia.

"The parallels drawn by certain international political players are sometimes based on wishful thinking, and sometimes on one's own political interests," Mr. Saakashvili has stated on the outcomes of his meeting with Javier Solana, EU Supreme Foreign Policies and Security Representative.

The president of Georgia has noted that international recognition of separatist aspirations of Abkhazia and South Ossetia can make a dangerous precedent for other regions of Europe. In Saakashvili's words, the separatist groups are not supported by the majority of population in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and this is an evidence of the fact that one should not compare the situation in these republics with the one in Kosovo, where the Albanian majority strives to get independent from Kosovo.
