Yerevan townspeople commemorate genocide victims with torchlight march

In Yerevan, a torchlight march in memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire was held under the motto "Recognition, Condemnation, Compensation!" The marchers called for seeking compensations from Turkey.

Every year on April 24, residents of Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh and members of the Armenian Diaspora abroad mark the Remembrance Day of the Victims of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1923.

The march was organized by the youth wing of the ARF "Dashnaktsutyun" Party; the event gathered more than seven thousand people.

Tamar Gazaryan told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that she moved to Armenia in 2012 from Syria, when the war broke out there. She has noted that she takes part in the march every year. "It is my duty to my grandparents who fell victim to genocide," she said.

"National education is of great importance for us ... Unfortunately, in recent years we have departed from this, which affected the outcome of the Karabakh war," said Gegam Manukyan, a member of the "Dashnaktsutyun" Party. In his opinion, such events should be conducted in order not to forget the history.

"In 1915, as a result of the genocide, one and a half million Armenians perished. And this year, those who perished in the Karabakh war have been added to the death toll. After the autumn hostilities in Karabakh, this day should be marked especially," Nune Vardanyan believes.

Ms Vardanyan treats the possible recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the United States as important, but has no hope that it will change anything. The fight for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide must continue, she has stated.
