Pashinyan's threats voiced out despite opposition's observance of obligations

The parliamentary opposition gave no reason to doubt its compliance with the agreements with the Armenian authorities; and the acting Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, fully controls the situation in the country, political analysts believe.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 3, the Armenian Parliament rejected Pashinyan's candidacy for the post of the Head of the Cabinet (Premier). According to the agreements of the ruling faction with the opposition, the MPs should reject Pashinyan's candidacy twice in order to launch the procedure for repeated parliamentary elections. Pashinyan had warned the opposition that if the agreements were violated, then, at the second stage, the parliamentary majority could elect him as Prime Minister and cancel early elections.

Stepan Danielyan, a political analyst, has found it illogical for Pashinyan to remind about the need to follow the agreements. In his opinion, the authorities have the resources to control the situation; as the ruling party has no serious rivals.

Pashinyan has made a warning to the parliamentary opposition, although these MPs gave no doubts about their following the agreements, Akop Badalyan, an observer, has stated. He has recalled that the opposition had promised not to nominate its own candidate for the Premier.

Pashinyan is afraid of losing power, said Armen Badalyan, a political strategist. "He is fixated on power and is painful about any prospects of losing it. Moreover, realizing that he will have to respond for losing the war and 5000 casualties," the expert has explained.

However, he has noted that Pashinyan controls special services and the police, without whose support "any possibility of a putsch is excluded."
