Georgian opposition unites to defend LGBTs' rights

Fifteen oppositional parties in Georgia signed an agreement to combat discrimination and violence against the LGBT community and violations of the right of its members to peaceful assembly.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in Georgia, LGBT activists are systematically attacked. On April 24, in Tbilisi, two adherents of non-traditional sexual orientation were beaten up. Also on May 1, a transgender girl was beaten in the city.

The above agreement has been dated to the Day Againts Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, which is marked on May 17, the "Rustavi-2" TV Channel has explained. "Given the homophobic and transphobic sentiments in Georgia, we believe it important for political parties to take a common position on the rights of queer people," the "Georgia Online" quotes the statement of the "Tbilisi Pride".

Let us remind you that Georgian human rights defenders have repeatedly recognized the problem in the country with the violation of LGBT people's rights. A year ago, on the occasion of the Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, Nino Lomzhariya, the Ombudsperson, and several NGOs issued statements in which they treated the situation of LGBT people in the country as depressing.
