Number of LGBT opponents detained in Tbilisi rises to 20

After clashes with law enforcers at the rally against the "LGBT Week" in Tbilisi, already 20 people have been detained; they are accused of insubordination to the police and hooliganism, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 1, the "LGBT Week" started in Tbilisi with the screening of a British documentary about the "March of Dignity-2019". Law enforcers detained 12 participants of the anti-LGBT rally for disobeying the police’s demands and hooliganism. One policeman was injured during the clashes.

Political analysts stick to different opinions about how much the attitude towards the LGBT community has changed in the Georgian society.

During the film screening, LGBT opponents tried to break through the police cordon and get into the cinema.

Let us remind you that LGBT activists announced the "LGBT Week" to be held in Tbilisi on July 1-5, which will end with the "March of Dignity". The Georgian Patriarchy called on foreign diplomats to refrain from supporting the gay events, while the Georgian “Eri” Party demanded to ban the “March of Dignity” and threatened to hold counteractions. The Georgian Ombudsperson, Nino Lomdjariya, has called on the police to ensure the marchers’ safety.
