Eight persons detained in Stavropol Territory in case on extremism

In the Stavropol Territory, law enforcers detained eight suspected members of the extremist organization “At-Takfir wal-Hijra”*, banned in Russia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in March, investigators suspected nine residents of Dagestan in the creation of a unit of the grouping “At-Takfir wal-Hijra”*. Since the grouping was declared extremist and banned in Russia in 2010, its members were repeatedly detained in different regions of the country, the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent was informed by British journalist Joanna Paraschuk, an analyst and a creator of the “Chechens in Syria” project. “During the past 10 years, it seems that the grouping has reappeared in Russia. At least judging by the number of arrests of suspects,” noted Joanna Paraschuk in March.

In April, in the Stavropol Territory, another unit of the grouping “At-Takfir wal-Hijra”* was revealed. Then 16 suspects were detained, and on July 21 and 22, the police detained eight more suspects, the FSB Department for the Stavropol Territory reports today. The detainees promoted their ideas and attracted new members to the extremist organization, the “Interfax” reports with reference to the spokesperson for the FSB Department for the Stavropol Territory.

* the organization was recognized as extremist by the decision of the Supreme Court (SC) of Russia, and its activities are prohibited on the territory of the Russian Federation.
