Political analysts dispute about Taliban threat to Southern Caucasus

The change of power in Afghanistan will not directly affect the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, Azerbaijani political analysts have suggested. The events in Afghanistan may lead to a strengthening of Turkey's role in the region and carry risks for Armenia, Armenian political journalists have noted.

The Azerbaijan-Afghanistan relations will continue after the change of power in Kabul, said Mekhman Aliev, Director of the "Turan" News Agency.

He believes that the events in Afghanistan will not affect the situation around the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. "Azerbaijan needs no support of the Taliban or anyone else, since it successfully coped with the enemy during the last autumn war. Meanwhile, the Taliban has no political, economic or ideological reasons to support Yerevan," Mr Aliev has noted.

Naira Airumyan, a political observer and the editor of the Russian version of the "Lragir.am", believes that the Taliban's advent to power in Afghanistan may carry certain risks for Armenia. "If a rigid Baku-Ankara-Karachi axis is formed with the "US blessing," it will negatively affect Armenia," she believes.
