Memorial watch participants urge not to forget Beslan terror act

On the anniversary of the Beslan terror act, residents of North Ossetia traditionally bring toys, flowers and water bottles to the school gym – the tragedy venue; they light candles in memory of the victims. The participants of the three-day-long memorial watch come with their children to commemorate the terror act victims.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 1, the above mourning events in North Ossetia started with a memorial service and laying of flowers at the Beslan school, which was seized by terrorists 17 years ago.

On September 1, 2004, terrorists took 1128 hostages in a gym of the Beslan school No. 1. The special operation to release the hostages was finished on September 3, 2004. As a result of the terror act, 334 people were killed, including 186 children, and other 810 people were injured.

A young man, who introduced himself as Rustam, has told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that he lives and works in Vladikavkaz; and every year he comes to Beslan to mourn with local residents.

"I believe that everyone should visit this place in order to understand something for oneself. Being here, inside the gym, everything passes through a person. Here, everyone will understand something for himself. I wouldn't like people to come here, leave and forget," said the young man.

Many come to Beslan School No. 1 with their children. Thus, Marat from Vladikavkaz brought his two sons today with him. He told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that he is a law enforcer.

“I brought my kids here so that they know our history, so that they know and don't forget it, and urge others to come and mourn. We must also remember those special agents who perished here. Many people died, and many children – people should not forget; a lot of evil is happening on the earth; and this evil must be stopped. Children should not die, especially at school," said the man.
