Gadjibekov, Sultan Ismail ogly
Azerbaijani composer. National artist (narodny artist) of the USSR (1973).
Born May 8, 1919, in the city of Shusha, Nagorny Karabakh. In 1946, graduated from Azerbaijani Conservatoire, Composition Department, where his teacher was B.I. Seidman. In 1938-1940, was conductor of Baku Music Comedy Theater; since 1948, was art director (in 1955-1962 ? director) of Azerbaijani Philharmonic. Since 1948, was a teacher at Azerbaijani Conservatoire; since 1965, was its professor; since 1969, was its rector. Authored ballet Gyulshen (1950), music comedy Kyzyl Gyul (Red Rose) (1940), juvenile opera Iskander and a Shepherd (1947), two symphonies (1944 and 1946), concerto for orchestra (1964), etc. State Prize of the USSR (1952), State Prize of Azerbaijani SSR to honor U. Gadjibekov (1970). Awarded two orders and several medals.
Deceased in Baku on September 19, 1974.
