Reporters from Azerbaijan and Georgia included in international list of killed journalists

The international press freedom organization “Reporters Without Borders” has released a list of the journalists killed in 2021 while carrying out their professional duties. The list includes two journalists from Azerbaijan and one from Georgia.

The international NGO “Reporters Without Borders” included in the list dead Magerram Ibragimov, a correspondent of the Azerbaijani public news agency “Azertac”, and Siradj Abishov, a cameraman of the “AzTV” Azerbaijani public television channel. Both were killed by a mine. The list also includes Lekso Lashkarava, a correspondent of the “Pirveli” Georgian TV Channel, who died after being beaten in Tbilisi.

On June 4, “AzTV” cameraman Siradj Abishov and Magerram Ibragimov (Alioglu), a correspondent of the “Azertac” public news agency, were blown up by a mine in the Kelbadjar District.

On July 11, relatives of Lekso Lashkarava found him dead. Before that, the journalist was severely beaten during the riots at the protest actions against the gay pride parade in Tbilisi.

In total, 38 journalists from 20 countries were killed in 2021.

In the 2021 World Press Freedom Index compiled by the NGO “Reporters Without Borders”, Azerbaijan occupies the 167th place out of 180 countries.

    The European Court of Human Rights has found that the rights of Faig Amirov, the former financial director of the “Azadlig” opposition newspaper, and Aytadj Tapdyg, a “Meydan TV” journalist, have been violated. The European Court has obliged the authorities of Azerbaijan to pay the journalists 14,500 euros in compensation.
