Georgian citizen detained for violating border with South Ossetia

A resident of Tbilisi was detained at a checkpoint of the road-and-patrol police service (known as DPS) for illegal border crossing, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of South Ossetia reports today.

A 47-year-old man was detained in the village of Vanel in the Dzau District. He went there on foot, had no passport with him, and explained that he had illegally crossed the border in the area of the Ergneti village.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that the detention of Georgian citizens on the line of demarcation with South Ossetia still takes place. So, on October 29, the Georgian State Security Service announced the detention of two persons near the village of Lopani and reported about the measures for their release.

On November 16, South-Ossetian President Anatoly Bibilov signed a decree pardoning Georgian citizen Gennady Bestaev, sentenced to three years of imprisonment for violating the border, who fell into a coma in a Tskhinvali prison. Gennady Bestaev was taken to a clinic in Tbilisi and stays in a resuscitation ward in severe condition.
