Court marshals ban journalist Sevindj Vagifgyzy to leave Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijan authority in charge of enforcing judgements has asked the court to impose a ban on Sevindj Vagifgyzy, a journalist of the "Meydan" TV, to leave the country. She is charged with non-execution of the judgement on the lawsuit submitted by Elmira Alandarova, a school deputy principal.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 27, 2019, Alandarova filed a lawsuit against Vagifgyzy, demanding an apology, compensation and deleting a video from the Internet about the presidential election in April 2018. The court ordered Vagifgyzy to pay compensation in the amount of 1000 manats (USD 600).

"They accuse me of failing to perform the judgement prescribing to 'delete the video, publish a refutation and apologize'," Ms Vagifgyzy said, treating the demands as unlawful.

"The videos I made confirm the presence of Alandarova at the polling station, although she was neither a voter nor a member of the election commission," Sevindj Vagifgyzy has added.

Ainur Elgyunesh, a representative of the "Meydan" TV treats the claims against the journalist as untenable.

"The materials released by the "Meydan" TV belong to the TV Company," Ms Elgyunesh has explained.

Khalid Agaliev, the head of the Media Rights Group, has noted that the obligations that he/she is unable to fulfil cannot be imposed on a journalist.
