ECtHR resumes consideration of complaints from Russia

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) will continue considering complaints received from Russia about violations of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) until September 16, the ECtHR has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 16, the ECtHR suspended the consideration of complaints from Russia due to Russia's withdrawal from the Council of Europe. At the same time, the cases that were received from Russians before March 16 should be considered; and the decisions made before this date should be executed, analysts have noted.

Now, it is reported that the ECtHR will continue considering complaints received from Russia. "The ECtHR retains its competence to consider complaints against the Russian Federation, provided that the violations that triggered them were committed before September 16, 2022," the court's website says.

Earlier, Galina Arapova**, the director of the Centre for the Protection of Media Rights*, explained that the fact that Russia had ceased to be a member of the Council of Europe does not relieve it of the obligations that had been taken under the ECHR for all the violations committed before September 16.
