Bibilov confirms referendum on South Ossetia's joining Russia

A referendum on South Ossetia's entry into Russia will take place, Anatoly Bibilov, who earlier admitted the victory of his opponent, Alan Gagloev, in the second round of presidential election.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 8, South Ossetia held voting in the second round of the presidential election. The voter turnout made 68.2%. The incumbent republic's president, Anatoly Bibilov, has congratulated Alan Gagloev on his victory in the second round after the Central Election Commission (CEC) announced the preliminary outcomes of the vote.

On March 30, Anatoly Bibilov announced his intention to hold a referendum on joining Russia; and the next day announced the need for unification with North Ossetia.

Despite the defeat at the election, Anatoly Bibilov has stated today that the referendum on joining Russia will take place, the RIA "Novosti" reports.

According to Mr Bibilov, all the documents necessary for holding the referendum have already been collected and submitted to the CEC, which should consider them, and then submit them to the Supreme Court and set the date thereof, the RBC (RosBusinessConsulting) reports.
