Yerevan: oppositionists ask prosecutor to react to violence against protesters

Opposition leaders have urged the audience of the rally held in France Square in Yerevan to go to the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) and demand that police officers who used violence against activists at the recent protests be held accountable.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that during the June 3 clashes of law enforcers with opposition supporters in Yerevan, a total of 39 policemen and 21 demonstrators received traumas, the Armenian Ministry of Public Health announced.

On June 6, in central Yerevan, in France Square, a rally of opposition supporters was held, the "News-Armenia" has reported.

Ishkhan Sagatelyan, a Vice-Speaker of the Parliament, who is one of the leaders of the "Resistance" Movement, has noted that not a single policeman was detained after the clashes on June 3, despite the available evidence. "I appeal to the Prosecutor General; we have the evidence sufficient to detain the policemen who had committed violations. Otherwise, the GPO will promote new cases of violence," Mr Sagatelyan believes. Then he urged activists to march to the GPO and demand that the offending policemen be held accountable. In the morning on June 7, the opposition intends to send a letter to the GPO containing facts about law enforcers' violations, the Vice-Speaker has stated.
