Azerbaijan announces opening of road bypassing Lachin within a week
Armenia has failed to finish its section of the road alternative to the Lachin Corridor, but Azerbaijan undertook it at the request of the Armenian community of Karabakh. This was announced by the Azeri State Highway Agency (ASHA) that promised to open the new road for traffic within the next week.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Azerbaijan announced the end of the construction of the road along the new route of the Lachin Corridor.
Amid the construction of an alternative road to the Lachin Corridor, which was created by the Aliev-Pashinyan-Putin agreement, the conflict has escalated. On August 5, Nagorno-Karabakh authorities told residents of the communities of Akhavno (the Azerbaijani name is Zabukh), Sus and Berdzor (Lachin) that they had to leave their houses by August 25, since the Lachin Corridor would be transferred to Azerbaijan. Most of the residents of the Lachin Corridor have decided to settle in the Syunik Region of Armenia; 20 families have already settled there.
The ASHA has explained that the 4.8-kilometre-long section will connect the new road with the old one on the two countries' border. Within a week, an alternative road to bypass Lachin (Berdzor) will be commissioned, the ASHA has assured.
A source in the Azerbaijani government has noted that until the commissioning of the new road, traffic along the old route of the Lachin Corridor will continue.
