Moscow City Court upholds appeals of “Memorials”*

The Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Memorial”* and the “International Historical Educational Charitable and Human Rights Society ‘Memorial’” (“International Memorial”)* won appeals on complaints about illegal searches in the offices of organizations. The Moscow City Court cancelled the decision of the first instance court, which refused to consider the complaints.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on March 4, searches were carried out in the “Memorial”* offices, and law enforcers seized office equipment and documents. In their complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), the human rights activists pointed out that the searches were carried out with procedural violations and that the office equipment was seized unreasonably.

On February 28, the Supreme Court (SC) of Russia upheld the decision to liquidate the “International Memorial”*. On April 5, in Moscow, a court also upheld the decision to liquidate the HRC “Memorial”*. On June 17, the team of the HRC “Memorial”* announced the creation of the public organization “Human Rights Protection Centre ‘Memorial’” (without forming a legal entity).

*The organization was included by the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) in the register of NCOs, performing the functions of a foreign agent, and was liquidated by a court’s decision.
