ECtHR upholds Darya Polyudova's complaint about long custody

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has considered the complaint lodged by Darya Polyudova, an activist from the Krasnodar Territory, about her excessively long custody and the red tape in considering her appeals against her custody extensions. The ECtHR has found the complaints reasonable and awarded her compensation in the amount of 2000 euros.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 31, 2021, a court in Moscow sentenced Darya Polyudova, the leader of the "Left-Hand Resistance" movement, to six years in prison. The reason for the prosecution was in her posts in the social network, where Polyudova, according to the court, justified the activities of the Chechen field commanders, Shamil Basaev and Aslan Maskhadov, as well as of Evgeny Manyurov, who in December 2019 opened fire near the FSB building in Moscow. The defence insists that Polyudova made no direct calls for terrorism. The Russian Supreme Court has upheld the verdict. In December 2021, it became known that a new criminal case was opened against Polyudova. According to the FSB, she had created the movement in order to publicly justify terrorism and extremism.

In 2018, Darya Polyudova became a laureate of the Sakharov Award "For Journalism as a Deed". The Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial"* recognized her as a political prisoner.

Polyudova had filed a complaint in connection with the justification of terrorism case, under which she was kept at the SIZO (pre-trial prison) from January 15, 2020 to May 31, 2021.

Polyudova intends to appeal against her sentence on charges of publicly inciting extremist activities and justifying terrorism at the ECtHR separately, the "Kavkaz.Realii"** project reports.

Let us remind you that on September 16, Russia ceased to be a party to the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR). As of September 16, there were 17,450 applications against Russia pending before the ECtHR.
