Activist from Adygea, Roman Taganov, released from SIZO

Roman Taganov, an activist, is back at large from the SIZO (pre-trial prison) a week after the decision of the Maykop court on his conditional custody came into force.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 6, the Supreme Court (SC) of Adygea upheld the sentence to Taganov. This means that his freedom restraint measure applied to Taganov ceases to be valid, and he must be released from the SIZO, Felix Vertegel, an advocate, has explained and suggested that Taganov would be released on October 6 or 7. However, on October 9, the advocate said that Taganov was still in custody. Mr Vertegel has filed a complaint with the prosecutor's office.

Let us remind you that on March 19, it became known that Taganov had been placed under house arrest. The activist stated that he tried to resist the detention, as law enforcers were in civilian clothes and did not introduce themselves. According to Roman's version, after he was placed under house arrest, he lost his work; and his family with two small children is on the brink of survival.

On July 29, the court sentenced Taganov to three years of conditional imprisonment on charges of applying of non-dangerous violence against law enforcers. He refused to plead guilty.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
