Comedian from North Ossetia Ariana Lolaeva demands to recognize article on discrediting Russian army as unconstitutional

Ariana Lolaeva, a comedian from North Ossetia, filed a complaint to the Constitutional Court with the demand to recognize the article on discrediting the Russian Armed Forces as unconstitutional, the Human Rights Protection Centre “Memorial” reports.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in Vladikavkaz, a court fined Ariana Lolaeva, who was accused of discrediting the Russian Armed Forces. In her complaint, the comedian from North Ossetia has emphasized that calls for peace and criticism of the authorities should not be regarded as discrediting the Russian army.

Ariana Lolaeva joined the wave of complaints to the Court of Cassation against the article on discrediting the Russian Armed Forces, which was launched by lawyers of the human rights project “OVD-Info”*, the Charitable Foundation for Assistance to Convicts and Their Families* (“Rus Sidiaschaya”)*, the Human Rights Protection Centre “Memorial”*, and several advocates. On May 31, Oleg Orlov, the co-chair of the Human Rights Protection Centre “Memorial”, filed a similar complaint.

On June 8, in Moscow, a court began considering the criminal case against Oleg Orlov, who was accused of discrediting the Russian Armed Forces. The accusation is based on the Russian translation of Oleg Orlov’s article posted on Facebook**, published in the French publication “Mediapart”, which condemns the Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine. He faces up to three years of imprisonment.

**On March 21, 2022, the Tverskoi Court of Moscow banned the activities in Russia of the Meta Company, owning the Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, in connection with extremist activities.
