Zurich protesters demand to cancel Chechen Ali Bataev's deportation

Members of the Chechen Diaspora have held a rally in Zurich, during which they called on Swiss authorities not to deport Ali Bataev, a native of Chechnya, to Russia, since he is expected to be persecuted in his homeland.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 14, 2023, it became known that Swiss authorities had treated Ali Bataev's stay in the country as illegal; he was placed in a deportation centre, where he went on a hunger strike. On August 4, on the 52nd day of his hunger strike, he needed medical assistance.

On August 9, in Zurich, several dozen members of the Chechen Diaspora protested against the deportation of Ali Bataev.

"Ali Bataev ... has been on hunger strike for 56 days without receiving any medical help. We want to remind you that you are responsible for his life," says their appeal to Swiss authorities, the "Kavkaz Realii"* project reports.

Earlier, Chechen Diaspora members said that persecution awaits Bataev in his homeland, since he left Russia, not wanting to take part in the special military operation (SMO).

Let us remind you that a rally of the Chechen Diaspora in defence of Bataev was held on August 2 in a suburb of Bern. Actions were also held on July 21 in Switzerland, Austria and Germany; and on July 24 in Germany and Sweden.
