Court in Bishkek liberates Chechen Mansur Movlaev

Mansur Movlaev, a native of Chechnya, has been released after a court hearing held in the city of Bishkek, but the decision to expel him from Kyrgyzstan was upheld, his advocate has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 4, a court in Bishkek sentenced Mansur Movlaev to six months in penal colony and subsequent deportation from Kyrgyzstan to Russia for illegally crossing the border. Movlaev, who fears persecution by Chechen authorities, asked in court to be sentenced to the maximum term.

In Russia, Mansur Movlaev has been put on the wanted list on charges of financing extremist activities. On September 15, 2023, he asked for asylum in Kyrgyzstan, and on September 30, his case of illegal border crossing came to the court. Recently, activists from Russia have often been detained in Kyrgyzstan under various pretexts, while the country's authorities very rarely grant them with the refugee status, human rights defenders have pointed out.

Mansur Movlaev was released after a session of the Bishkek City Court, his advocate, Bakyt Avtandil, has informed.

"The decision to expel him from the country remained in force. But after the court's decision, no one approached or stopped him," the "Radio Azattyk" quotes the advocate as saying.
