Sources report increased security measures after calls for rally in Makhachkala

Additional police forces have been deployed to the streets of Makhachkala following calls for a rally posted online, and several streets have been cordoned off, sources report.

On December 19, the Security Council of Dagestan threatened with criminal prosecution of those who respond to calls posted on social media for an unsanctioned rally on Malygina Street. The imam of the mosque located on Malygina Street asked Muslims not to participate in protest actions.

Let us remind you that in early November, the social media also disseminated calls to go to a protest action in Makhachkala to demand the release of those detained after the riots at the Makhachkala airport. Sergey Melikov, the leader of Dagestan, called on local residents not to go to rallies not sanctioned by the authorities. At least two persons got administrative penalties for posting on WhatsApp* the calls for a rally. On November 9, the administration of the leader of Dagestan responded to new calls for unsanctioned rallies, threatening participants of such actions with fines and imprisonment.

*On March 21, 2022, the Tverskoi Court of Moscow banned the activities in Russia of the Meta Company, owning the Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, in connection with extremist activities.
