Dagestani leader calls for closing issue of unrest at Makhachkala airport

Anti-Semitic actions in Dagestan were a failed provocation, announced republic’ leader Sergey Melikov. He has called for “putting aside” the topic of unrest at the Makhachkala airport.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that after the riots at the Makhachkala airport, the leader of Dagestan accused the rioters of trying to split society in Russia and promised inevitable punishment for them. Dagestani athletes Khabib Nurmagomedov and Makhmud Magomedov called on Sergey Melikov to show leniency towards the rioters. On November 1, the leader of Dagestan announced that those who sent policemen to hospital, as well as those who spread false information and participated in pogroms, will be held accountable to the law.

By November 25, in Dagestan, courts had received administrative cases against 515 people. The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan received 143 complaints about arrests in the criminal case on mass riots. Three persons are also charged with using violence against a law enforcer, and one with an attempt on the law enforcer’s life. For most of those accused in the criminal cases, their arrests have been extended until the end of March.

“It’s probably time to put the topic aside. Because both before those events and today, Dagestan is a centre that unites people of different faiths and nationalities,” stated Sergey Melikov as quoted by the “RIA Novosti” news agency.

The “Caucasian Knot” has also reported that the Jewish communities of Kizlyar and Khasavyurt reported a tense atmosphere after anti-Semitic actions in Dagestan and suspended their activities.
