Volgograd resident suspected of vandalism placed in mental hospital

A resident of the Svetloyarsky District in the Volgograd Region, who, according to the investigators’ version, broke a memorial plaque about the deportation of the Kalmyk people, has been under the supervision of a psychiatrist for more than 10 years and after the incident was placed to a specialized medical institution, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported.

On December 27, a memorial plaque dedicated to the deportation of the Kalmyk people was broken in the Volgograd Region. The memorial plaque was installed on the eve of the 80th anniversary of the deportation of the Kalmyk people, and its destruction deeply offended residents of Kalmykia. Local residents interviewed by the “Caucasian Knot” connected the incident with the atmosphere of hatred in society and the political course towards the rehabilitation of Stalinism.

The resident of the Svetloyarsky District, who, according to the law enforcers’ version, broke the memorial plaque, was placed to a specialized medical institution, the press service for the Volgograd Line Department of the MIA’s Transport Directorate for the Privolzhsky Federal District reported.

Let us remind you that in 1943, an NKVD operation was carried out to evict Kalmyk people to the regions of Siberia and the Far East. The Kalmyk people were accused of state treason, joining military detachments organized by the Nazis, and organizing an anti-Soviet rebel movement. The total number of evicted Kalmyks reached about 120,000 people.
