Chechnya enters top three in terms of number of missing people

In 2023, in Chechnya; 1608 people were reported missing. According to the indicator, the republic is second only to Moscow and the Moscow Region and is significantly ahead of other regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD) and Southern Federal District (SFD).

During the years of the counterterrorist operation (CTO) in Chechnya and the rule of Ramzan Kadyrov, thousands of people disappeared in the republic, but Russia did not take any measures to investigate their disappearances, human rights defenders Oleg Orlov and Alexander Cherkasov claim.

During the second Chechen military campaign alone, up to 5000 people fell victim to forced disappearances, and over the past 30 years, about 8000 people have disappeared in Northern Caucasus.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reports that according to the state statistics website, in 2023, 36,307 people were listed as missing in Russia. The largest number of the missing people is listed in Moscow (2014), the Moscow Region (1814), and Chechnya (1608).

There are significantly fewer missing people in other regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District and Southern Federal District: in the Stavropol Territory – 545, Dagestan – 301, North Ossetia – 244, Kabardino-Balkaria – 182, Karachay-Cherkessia – 155, and Ingushetia – 127.

The Rostov Region lists 574 people as missing, the Volgograd Region – 538, the Astrakhan Region – 173, Kalmykia – 106, and Adygea – 100.
