“Memorial” Centre for Defence of Human Rights recognized as foreign agent three days after verdict against Oleg Orlov*

The Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) included the “Memorial” Centre for Defence of Human Rights* in the register of foreign agents. The decision was made three days after the verdict against Oleg Orlov*, the co-chair of the “Memorial” Centre for Defence of Human Rights*, under the charge of discrediting the Russian Armed Forces.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that after the liquidation of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Memorial”** in June 2022 the public organization “Memorial” Centre for Defence of Human Rights* was created.

In October 2022, the HRC “Memorial”** became one of the Nobel Peace Prize laureates. The decision was made taking into account the many years of the “Memorials”** activities for the benefit of peace and respect for human rights. The award provides a chance to continue the human rights and historical activities of the “Memorials”**, human rights defenders emphasize.

The Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) explained that the unregistered public association “Memorial” Centre for Defence of Human Rights* “was disseminating false information aimed at creating a negative image of Russia and the Russian Army.” “It opposed the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine and supported organizations recognized as extremist by a court’s decision,” reported the Russian MoJ on its official website.

A few days earlier, Oleg Orlov*, the co-chair of the “Memorial” Centre for Defence of Human Rights*, was found guilty of discrediting the Russian Armed Forces and sentenced to 2.5 years of imprisonment.
