Rights defenders complaint to the ECtHR about Tepsurkaev's murder
The "Team against Torture" (TaT)* has sent a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) demanding that Russian authorities be held responsible for the murder of Salman Tepsurkaev, a native of Chechnya, and for the inefficient inquiry into his death.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 22, 2021, Chechen investigators refused to recognize Tepsurkaev's wife Elizaveta as the suffered party. On October 19, 2021, the ECtHR found Russian authorities responsible for Tepsurkaev's disappearance and torture and obliged them to pay compensation of EUR 26,000.
The TaT* has reported that a complaint regarding Salman Tepsurkaev, who is also the moderator of the chat at the opposition Chechen Telegram channel, has been sent to the ECtHR.
After Tepsurkaev's kidnapping, human rights defenders provided investigators with proofs of the involvement of Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) officers in his disappearance: a video from a street surveillance camera, which recorded the kidnapping, and information about the kidnappers and their cars. One of the cars belonged to a Chechen policeman.
Rights defenders ask the ECtHR to find Russian authorities responsible for the murder of Tepsurkaev and the inefficient inquiry into his death; while the consequences of what happened was cruel treatment, which led to psychological sufferings of his relatives.
*The "Team against Torture" (TaT, formerly the "Committee against Torture" – CaT) was created by the lawyers who had earlier worked for the CaT, which was included into the register of the NCOs performing the functions of foreign agents.
